Have you thought about what it would be like to live in Toronto?
With a population of approximately 26 million, Toronto is the largest city in Canada and the 5th largest in North America, as well as being the country’s financial center. It is part of a densely populated region in south-central Ontario known as the Golden Horseshoe, home to eight million people.
Its main economic sectors include finance, business services, telecommunications, aerospace, transportation, media, art, cinema, television, advertising, software, medical research, education, tourism and sports industry. The Toronto Stock Exchange is the largest in the country and 7th in the world.
In addition to being the most populated province of Canada, Ontario is also the most urban. Its most outstanding feature is the continuous network of communities around the western end of Lake Ontario: St. Catharines, Niagara, Hamilton and Toronto. More than 50% of the population live in or around these cities.
Ontario has a culturally diverse population. The 2011 census reported over 200 different ethnic backgrounds. After the Canadian, the most common is English, followed by Scotch, Irish, French, German, Italian and Chinese. In 2011, about 26% of the province’s population was identified as a visible minority, a number that represents more than half of the total visible minorities in Canada. Most of these live in urban centres such as Toronto, Markham, Brampton and Mississauga.
