Unemployment Rate in Canada is The Lowest in 9 years

Canada is known as one of the countries with the most opportunities for personal and professional growth in the world.   Last July, the country recorded the lowest unemployment rate in 9 years: 6.3%   According to data published by Statistics Canada, unemployment in the country is the lowest recorded since October 2008.   In the last 12 months 387,600 jobs have been created in the Canadian economy, meaning the most significant annual growth since 2007.   In Ontario, 26,000 jobs were created in July, causing the unemployment rate to fall by 0.3 percentage points to 6.1%. In the previous 12 months, 138,000 jobs were created in this Canadian province (an increase of 2.0%) and the majority of this progress is recorded in full-time jobs, which are considered of better quality.   Among other interesting data that the study showed, is the percentage of unemployment in the rest of the provinces for the month of July:

  • British Columbia: 5.3%
  • New Brunswick: 6.5%
  • Manitoba: 5.0%
  • Saskatchewan: 6.6%
  • Prince Edward Island: 10%
  • Nova Scotia: 7.9%
  • Quebec: 5.8%

  Percentages in terms of labor sectors  

  • Employment in the wholesale and retail sector increased in July by 22,000. This sector has registered an upward trend in its capacity to employ since the last quarter of 2016, which coincides with an increase in sales. In 12 months, 94,000 jobs have been created in the sector (3.4% increase).
  • In the information, culture and recreation sector, employment increased by 18,000 jobs in July, a slight variation compared to the results recorded 12 months ago.
  • In manufacturing, 14,000 jobs were added in July, making it the third most consecutive increase in five months
  • By contrast, employment declined last month in education services (-32,000), especially in Ontario and Alberta.
  • Employment also fell in the public administration, but only in July, because if analyzed in relation to 12 months ago, this sector registered an increase of 48,000 jobs (increase of 5.3%).
