While spring is the season to plant new flowers that will bloom during summer. Prepping your garden during fall is what it will allow your garden to be in great shape for spring.
In order to do so, the first thing you need to do is to examine your garden to spot bald patches that require soil amendments, plants and/or flowers that need a trim, roots that need to be removed before winter, and plant pods that require to be moved indoors.
After examining your garden, follow these simple steps:
During spring and summer, the nutrients in the soil get depleted due to all the growing plants. For this reason, the fall season is the best time to add fertilizers that will be released over the winter months.
We recommend using organic fertilizers since these enrich the soil and shorten the number of chores you will have to perform during spring. When applying these to the lawn, make sure to cover all the empty areas that are left after removing plants and flowers from the summer and spring.
Gardening specialists recommend applying weed killers to the lawn twice a year. One of these times is during fall to get rid of the seeds that landed during summer. By doing this, you will avoid the uncontrolled growth of weed in spring.
If you have any pets, please keep them inside for a couple hours while due to the high toxicity found in the products you are applying.
If you grow tomato plants using seeds, fall is the ideal time to collect these. How can you do so? Easy, wait for the fruit to ripen or wait until it dries out. After that, soak it in water or simply remove the pulp to access the seeds.
To make sure your loved ones and your house won’t be in danger check for damaged branches on trees once all leaves have fallen. If these are in bad shape proceed to remove them.
Remember preparing your garden over the fall will shorten the number of chores you will have to complete over spring and summer. Don’t forget to share your results with us by tagging us @lisbethherrerarealtor
